My Go-To Green Smoothie

I’m the kind of person that has to do a workout right away in the morning or it just won’t get done. I really never have an appetite for a big breakfast, but a smoothie goes down really easy and gives me enough fuel. I used to drink smoothies that were mostly fruit and yogurt but they were usually just too sweet, and I knew there had to be more out there. I was making a smoothie recipe that a friend had given me that had a honeydew melon base, but it was just too much of a pain to make, and the melon had to be really good for it to be tasty.

This is the smoothie I drink every morning! It’s not too sweet, but has enough fruit to balance out the greens ( I do a mix of baby spinach kale and chard, which you can buy in a big bag all mixed together from Costco) so you don’t really even notice them. The liquid I use is coconut water which doesn’t add too much flavor but is packed with potassium and electrolytes. It doesn’t add any creaminess which is really good when you’re working with greens. Yogurt just doesn’t work. With the addition of hemp hearts and flax seeds you’re also getting a good dose of protein, omega-3s and fiber.

My vitamix blends everything up really nicely, but a good blender would get the job done too. I usually buy about 5 bunches of bananas at costco and just freeze them all at once so I always have bananas in the freezer.

Oh, sidenote: if you’re not already using reusable straws (you should be), I highly recommend these stainless steel ones from Zulay Kitchen

Have fun!
