How to Propagate Succulents
I don’t spend a lot of money on decorating my apartments, but when it comes to plants I can’t control myself.
Then I discovered how to propagate. Propa…what? Read on….
Growing up the daughter of a garden center owner, words like “propagate” were thrown around at the dinner table, but I never really knew what it meant.
Basically, it means that you can take another part of a plant and replant it to grow a new one. Think starfish legs.
So when I discovered that you can propagate succulents, it was all over. They are pretty much on every flat surface inside and outside our apartment. They are super easy to take care of since they don’t need a lot of water, and they are ridiculously gorgeous.
Plus, they’re free when you cut them from someone else’s plant.
My Dad would be so proud of his succulent stealing daughter.
How to Propagate Succulents
What You’ll Need:
- scissors or clippers
- succulent soil
- pots
- a big mama succulent to cut from
How To Do It:
- Find a big succulent plant to cut from, it should have plenty of growth so that you don’t leave it naked. See pictures.
- Using your scissors and cut 2-3 inch pieces with leaves from the plant, again see pictures.
- Remove leaves from bottom part of cutting, so that there is about 1 inch at the bottom.
- Let cuttings sit in a shaded area for 3 days so that the ends harden off and don’t just rot in the soil.
- After 3 days, plant cuttings in succulent soil about 1 inch deep.
- Don’t water them until they start to root, which should take a few weeks.
